VAERS accepts reports of adverse events and reactions that occur following vaccination. Healthcare providers, vaccine manufacturers, and the public can submit reports to the system. While very important in monitoring vaccine safety, VAERS reports alone cannot be used to determine if a vaccine caused or contributed to an adverse event or illness. The reports may contain information that is incomplete, inaccurate, coincidental, or unverifiable. In large part, reports to VAERS are voluntary, which means they are subject to biases. This creates specific limitations on how the data can be used scientifically. Data from VAERS reports should always be interpreted with these limitations in mind.
The strengths of VAERS are that it is national in scope and can quickly provide an early warning of a safety problem with a vaccine. As part of CDC and FDA’s multi-system approach to post-licensure vaccine safety monitoring, VAERS is designed to rapidly detect unusual or unexpected patterns of adverse events, also known as “safety signals.” If a safety signal is found in VAERS, further studies can be done in safety systems such as the CDC’s Vaccine Safety Datalink (VSD) or the Clinical Immunization Safety Assessment (CISA) project. These systems do not have the same scientific limitations as VAERS, and can better assess health risks and possible connections between adverse events and a vaccine.
Key considerations and limitations of VAERS data:
VAERS data available to the public include only the initial report data to VAERS. Updated data which contains data from medical records and corrections reported during follow up are used by the government for analysis. However, for numerous reasons including data consistency, these amended data are not available to the public.
Please note that the vaccine dose in question (mentioned in Item 4 and in item 17) is the 3rd dose of the vaccine (the booster shot). Patient received her first vaccine shot on 1/20/2021 (Pfizer) and her second dose of the vaccine on 2/8/2021 (Pfizer). It is also important to note that she did have an adverse reaction to the second dose on 2/8/2021. She had virtual appointment with her primary care doctor on that day (2/8) as her symptoms presented so I hope that her doctor reported that incident at that time. Her reaction to the second dose had the same symptoms as the third dose. Patient talked to her doctors before she got the third dose just to be safe since she had a bad reaction last time. They said she can get the booster but she should try the Moderna shot this time since she had a bad reaction to the Pfizer. They also recommend she increase her dosage of hydrocortisone. So that is what she did. About 8 hours after patient received the booster shot (3rd dose on 12/10/21), she started to develop the same symptoms that she had with the 2nd dose of the vaccine. She became shaky and developed a fever. She became very weak, she mostly just slept and was not very lucid or coherent. At times she could say a few words or nod her head but there were other times when she couldn't communcate clearly or verbalize her thoughts. She got the vaccine on a friday at noon, developed fever that night and the fever stayed with her until saturday night, it was around 100 to 101. Then Saturday night her temperature dropped to 98.5. During this entire episode we were consistently checking her temperature 2 different ways, at the temple and under the armpit. Up until Sunday morning, her smyptoms mirrored her reaction to the second dose of the vaccine. The only difference was that with the seocnd dose of the vaccine on 2/8/21 she actually had a higher fever that got up to 103/104. That did not appear to be the case this time with the booster. During this time she could not eat and only drank a little bit of water. She had been instructed by her doctor to increase her doseage of Hydrocortisone (in advance and during) because she has Addison's disease. So on Firday before she took the vaccine she had 1 pill and then around 3 pm she had another pill. I gave her the last pill that night around 9 or 10pm Then on Saturday she had 2 more pills. I tried to get her to eat yogurt or take pedialyte but she really couldn't. The water and the pills were all I could get her to take. She also could not walk on her own and we had to help her with bathroom issues and we mostly just kept her in a diaper and were changing her from the bed. So by Staurday night we thought she was imporiving because her fever went down and she was able to form more words she seemed more aware of her surroundings. Then on Sunday morning, she was moving around in bed more, seemed to have more energy but by mid morning I notied she did not seem lucid again and was not able to talk to me. So I took her temperature again and it was 100 so her fever came back. I got worried because this was different than her reaction to the secnd dose last time. Me, my father, and my brother decided that she had gone too long without norishment and she was not improving like last time so we wantd to drive her to the ER so they could track her vitals and help her. Right before we got her in the car she seemed to be shaking so I tried to keep her warm. But she could not move on her own so we had to carrier her to car, this all happened around 11-11:30am on Sunday 12/12/21. Then her condition went downhill so fast and no one was expecting it. She just stopped breathing all together in my car while I drove to the ER (it was about a 10 minute drive). Once we were at the ER they started chest compressions right away and they tried to revive her but it did not work. I am hoping the ER doctors already filled out this report but I am doing it just in case. We still do not have the autopsy report back yet but they decided to do an autopsy since she had a fatal reaction to the vaccine booster. I hope you can get the ER doctor's files and report, they said that although she did not feel like she had a fever on her forhead to the touch, they had done a rectal temp and it was really high (106). That is very odd and I hope you can get that record from the ER doctor at hospital. The medical examiner office is doing her autopsy. All her main doctors were and she originally called her endocrinologist, Dr to ask about the booster shot but Dr's office redirected her question to her primary care doctor. After my mother passed away we also called her oncologist to ask if her CLL diagnosis could have caused something but Dr said that is unlikely because her CLL was in an inactive state. Please feel free to call or email me if you haev any questions at all.
